The Ministry of Defence has signed a contract worth ₹1,220.12 crore with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Bengaluru, for the supply of 149 Software Defined Radios (SDRs) to the Indian Coast Guard. The deal, finalised on 20 February 2025, falls under the ‘Buy (Indian-IDDM)’ category, emphasising indigenous design, development, and manufacturing.

These next-generation radios are designed to significantly enhance the Indian Coast Guard’s communication infrastructure, enabling secure voice transmission and high-speed data exchange. This capability is essential for real-time information sharing, coordination, and operational awareness across maritime zones.

By improving secure communications, the new SDR systems will help the Coast Guard strengthen its primary missions—maritime law enforcement, search and rescue operations, coastal surveillance, protection of marine resources, and environmental monitoring. The radios will also improve interoperability during joint operations with the Indian Navy, allowing for seamless coordination in complex maritime scenarios.

The Ministry stated that the procurement aligns with the Government’s broader push to strengthen coastal and maritime security in support of its Blue Economy vision. The initiative aims to protect and sustainably harness ocean resources while safeguarding national interests in the Indian Ocean Region.

In addition to operational advantages, the contract reinforces the goals of Atmanirbhar Bharat by promoting domestic production of cutting-edge military-grade communication equipment. The project is expected to generate employment, build technological expertise, and strengthen India’s self-reliance in defence manufacturing.

This move is another step in modernising the Coast Guard’s infrastructure with indigenous solutions that support both national security and economic development objectives.
