The Indian Navy is to kick off the fourth edition of Swavlamban in New Delhi on November 25. 

Key highlights of the fourth edition to be held at the Manekshaw centre include Interactive Exhibit Zones, dedicated spaces for success stories and technologies that have graduated from the drawing board to the field. Strategic Launches, the launch of the “Innovathon,” the Swavlamban 4.0 document, and the release of critical compendia on technology challenges and armament indigenisation. 

The two-day seminar will push moves to support scalability of innovations with sessions like 'Bridging the Funding Gap’.

It will have sessions connecting startups with Venture Capitalists (VCs) to explore funding avenues. Export potential will be discussed with Defence Attachés and international partners in attendance. The event aims to open global doors for Indian innovators.

The Indian Navy has emerged as a torchbearer for the iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) initiative, owning nearly 35% of all challenges launched since its inception. In 198 challenges undertaken by the Navy,  150 new startups and MSMEs were inducted into the defence ecosystem. 

Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) have been accorded to projects worth Rs 2,700 crores, with procurement orders exceeding ₹1,400 crores.

Swavlamban 2022 launched 75 challenges under the ‘SPRINT’ initiative. The 2024 edition saw the debut of ‘Matangi’—an autonomous boat which sailed from Mumbai to Tuticorin.

Speaking at a curtain raiser press conference last week, Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan, Vice Chief of the Naval Staff (VCNS) said the fourth edition of the Naval Innovation and Indigenisation Organisation (NIIO) Seminar would shorten the "ideation to induction" cycle.

Vice Admiral Sanjay Vatsayan highlighted the seminar's theme, “Strength and Power through Innovation and Indigenisation.” He emphasized that the upcoming event will focus heavily on emerging and disruptive technologies required to meet the complex security needs of the maritime domain.

"Swavlamban has stood as a catalyst for bridging the gap between India’s most inventive minds and the complex operational requirements of our Navy," the Vice Chief said. He noted that the confidence placed in MSMEs and startups has transformed them into critical solution providers, shifting the narrative from mere participation to delivering holistic, end-to-end combat solutions.
