DRDO Launches Delhi-Based Quantum Tech Centre to Boost India’s Defence Capabilities

In a major boost to India’s ambitions in next-generation strategic technologies, the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) has inaugurated a cutting-edge Quantum Technology Research Centre (QTRC) in Delhi. The facility, located at Metcalfe House, was formally opened on 27 May by Dr Samir V Kamat, Secretary of the Department of Defence R&D and Chairman of DRDO.

The newly established QTRC is envisioned as a central hub for advanced quantum research with direct relevance to national security and defence preparedness. The facility is equipped with specialised infrastructure to support research in secure quantum communication, sensing technologies, and post-quantum cryptography—key focus areas as India looks to secure its communications and strategic networks against future threats.

Among the core capabilities of the centre are high-precision characterisation systems for Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) and Distributed Feedback (DFB) Lasers, along with testbeds for evaluating single-photon sources and alkali vapor cells. Experimental platforms have also been set up for developing and testing Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) protocols, which are crucial for building tamper-proof communication systems.

The initiative is being driven by DRDO’s Scientific Analysis Group (SAG), while foundational quantum systems are being developed by the Solid State Physics Laboratory (SSPL). Notable ongoing projects include the development of an ultra-compact atomic clock based on Coherent Population Trapping, designed to deliver precise timing in situations where satellite navigation systems are unavailable. Additionally, researchers are working on atomic magnetometers using optically pumped techniques for detecting magnetic fields with extreme sensitivity.

The facility also supports research into advanced solid-state quantum materials and devices, aimed at laying the groundwork for future defence technologies. With the QTRC, India aims to position itself at the forefront of quantum innovation, reinforcing its long-term strategic autonomy in critical technology domains.
