1. Raksha Mantri reviews progress of HAL projects

Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh reviewed the progress of major ongoing projects of Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) at a meeting in South Block on June 8. Particular focus was placed on the LCA programme. Self-reliance requires building capabilities from the ground up, and while significant progress has been made, some aspects are yet to fully meet the Indian Air Force’s requirements. It is expected that these shortcomings will be addressed later this year. Six LCA Mk1A aircraft fitted with engines are currently ready, while 18–24 aircraft are expected to be completed by the end of the year, provided HAL resolves the remaining Air Staff Qualitative Requirements (ASQR)-related shortfalls. Due to the delays, penalties may be imposed. HAL has been directed to fulfil its commitments and adhere to delivery timelines, according to a post on X cited by ANI.

2. Indian Navy unveils crest of Sanshodhak

The Indian Navy has unveiled the crest of Sanshodhak, the fourth ship of the Survey Vessel Large (SVL) class, built indigenously by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Limited (GRSE). The vessel highlights India's growing self-reliance in shipbuilding. Its crest reflects the full spectrum of hydrographic operations and is guided by the motto: “Leading the Way, Mastering the Oceans.”

3. Airbus Helicopters to unveil unmanned version of the H145

Airbus Helicopters will introduce an uncrewed version of its proven H145 helicopter, designated the U145, at the ILA Berlin Air Show, where the company will display a full-scale mock-up of the new platform. The U145 is intended to complement Airbus’ existing helicopter and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) portfolio. A maiden flight, with a safety pilot onboard, is planned for the end of 2026, while entry into service is expected at the beginning of the next decade.

4. France and Germany cancel FCAS fighter project

The Franco-German-Spanish Future Combat Air System (FCAS) programme, aimed at developing a sixth-generation fighter aircraft, has reportedly collapsed. German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron have agreed that development of the joint aircraft “will not be continued.” The project was hampered by differing operational requirements. France insisted on a lighter, nuclear-capable aircraft suitable for carrier operations, while Germany, which follows a land-based airpower strategy and does not possess nuclear weapons, favoured a heavier air-superiority platform and opposed funding French-specific requirements.

5. Airbus rolls out first A330 MRTT tanker for Canada

The first Airbus A330 MRTT for Canada’s Strategic Tanker Transport Capability (STTC) programme has reached another key stage at the conversion centre in Getafe, Spain. The next major milestone will be its maiden flight. The aircraft will support Canada’s sovereignty missions and enhance operations within both NORAD and NATO frameworks. In Royal Canadian Air Force service, the A330 MRTT will be designated the CC-330 Husky. Canada plans to operate a fleet of nine aircraft, comprising four newly built and five pre-owned A330-200s converted into tanker transports.
